It’s a new year and, for those who have been following along for a while, I’m sure you are wondering why I even bother to write these “resolution/new goals” posts each year. My blogging has been sporadic at best for quite a while, but perhaps this is the year I come back? Let’s see!
My resolution for this year is to stop wasting money on things that I don’t need or use. I am the worst for starting hobbies and then spending WAY TOO MUCH money without actually using the items. This is why I have more than 40 various Funko Pop vinyl figures (last used 2+ years ago for #bookstagram), thousands of postcards (I only use about 15 a month for Postcrossing), washi tape and stickers (rarely used on letters/postcards), a gym membership (used 1+ years ago), a handheld GPS (used 8+ years ago), bins of metal loops and beads (used 10+ years ago), 2 bins of wool (used 2+ years ago) and hundreds of books (that I’ll read and blog about “some day”). This unnecessary spending also includes my blog. If I don’t blog, why am I spending money on a maintaining a domain?
That doesn’t mean that I’m going to give up on any of those hobbies (well, maybe the jewelry making). Instead I’m going to try to use the stuff I already have on hand, to reconnect with the hobbies that I enjoyed but forgot about, and hopefully learn to appreciate the things that I have without adding to the hoard. I also want to declutter my home, stop saving things that I don’t need or use, and be more mindful of where my money is going. Hopefully this will also help me get my finances in order.
This week I started my latest life journey (see: obsession) by watching Tidying up with Marie Kondo on Netflix. Based on her bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, it’s one of those feel-good shows that makes you really want to clean your house… or at least think about cleaning your house. I decided to speed read the book just so that I could get the best of both worlds, and I have to say that the TV show really breaks the concepts down in a more manageable way. Here are my take-aways from both the book and show:
Clean by category, not location: Marie used to pick one area of the home to clean each day. After cleaning a drawer in the bathroom on Monday, she found herself cleaning a drawer that contained nearly the exact same items on Tuesday. If she had just put all the bathroom stuff together she would have noticed it earlier and saved herself a lot of time.
Purge before organizing: It is much easier to find space for the things you want to keep if all the stuff you don’t need is out of the way.
You should only KonMarie your own stuff: Taking on the responsibility of tidying for your family may sound like a good idea, but usually just ends up making people angry. You don’t know what “sparks joy” for another person, even if they are your child or spouse.
If you must store things, store them in clear containers: If you can’t see what you have then you will likely buy more of that thing.
